How to Accessibility Converter

Many PDF documents are difficult or impossible to read for people with dyslexia, low vision, or colour sensitivity. ZimaPDF's Accessibility Converter rebuilds your PDF with higher contrast, improved spacing, and optional OCR for screen readers — all processed privately in your browser.

1

Upload your PDF document

Select a PDF from your device. Both text-based digital PDFs and scanned image documents are supported.

2

Choose visual accessibility settings

Select a colour overlay tint (Yellow, Blue, Green, or Rose) to reduce visual stress and glare. Adjust font size and line spacing to improve readability for dyslexia or low vision.

3

Enable OCR for scanned documents (optional)

If your PDF contains scanned images with no selectable text, enable OCR to extract the text and append a plain-text version that screen readers and accessibility tools can use.

Why use ZimaPDF for accessibility converter?

Colour Overlay Tints

Scientific research shows that coloured overlays reduce visual stress for readers with dyslexia and scotopic sensitivity syndrome. Choose from Yellow, Blue, Green, or Rose tints.

OCR for Scanned Documents

Many older PDFs are just images of text that screen readers can't process. Enable OCR to make them accessible by extracting the text and embedding it as readable content.

Improved Spacing and Contrast

Increase line spacing and apply high-contrast colour schemes that make text easier to distinguish for readers with low vision or colour blindness.

Private — No Upload Required

Medical records, educational assessments, and personal documents never leave your device. All processing — including OCR — runs locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool specifically help readers with dyslexia?

Yes. Colour overlays, increased line spacing, and dyslexia-friendly font options are all research-backed approaches to reducing reading difficulty for people with dyslexia. These options are all available in the Accessibility Converter.

Will the layout change significantly after conversion?

Minor layout adjustments may occur to accommodate increased spacing and contrast changes. The original text content remains intact — only the visual presentation is modified.

Does this tool work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. Enable the OCR option to extract text from scanned pages. OCR runs locally in your browser using Tesseract.js and makes scanned content readable by screen readers and text-to-speech tools.

What colour overlays are available and what do they do?

Yellow, Blue, Green, and Rose tints are available. Each is applied as a semi-transparent layer over the page to reduce the contrast of the white background, which can decrease pattern glare and visual stress associated with Meares-Irlen Syndrome.

Can the output file be used with screen readers like NVDA or JAWS?

If the original PDF has embedded selectable text (or OCR has been run), the output file will contain readable text that screen readers can access. Ensure the PDF has properly tagged text for optimal screen reader compatibility.

Is the accessibility conversion reversible?

ZimaPDF always creates a new output file without modifying your original. Keep your original PDF and you can always revert to it or run the accessibility conversion again with different settings.
